Ukrhydroenergo has raised $211 mln to implement the energy storage+SPP projects

PJSC Ukrhydroenergo will raise 211 million dollars from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Clean Technologies Fund to implement a project to install 197 MW of lithium-ion energy storage systems and 64 MW of solar photovoltaic plants to charge them.

The relevant decision on the initiative of the Ministry of Energy was approved by the Government at a meeting on the 2nd of June, 2021.

The investment project "Ukraine - Increasing the sustainability of the energy system for European integration of the power grid (Installation of hybrid systems for electricity production in "Ukrhydroenergo") is planned to be implemented jointly with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Clean Technologies Fund. The project will attract loans of 177 million dollars and 34 million dollars, respectively.

It is noted that 197 MW of lithium-ion energy storage systems will be installed on the territories of Ukrhydroenergo stations, which are planned to be used to provide ancillary services for frequency regulation and active power, including the frequency maintenance reserve and the frequency recovery reserve. In addition, 63.9 MW of solar photovoltaic power plants will be installed to power the HPPs and PSPs and to charge the storage systems.

The use of SES facilities will provide an alternative source of energy for the stations' own needs and battery charging, as well as to increase the company's supply in the electricity market.

"Installation of hybrid power plants based on battery storage will allow PJSC "Ukrhydroenergo" to provide the transmission system operator with an additional reserve of frequency support and expand the regulatory range of automatic reserve of frequency recovery, which are necessary to ensure reliable and sustainable operation of UES of Ukraine quality of electricity ", - noted in the Cabinet of Ministers.
